Meridia Recall?
Medical experts are calling for a recall of Meridia, stating that the weight loss drug is too dangerous for public use.
Public Citizen, a consumer group, filed a petition with the FDA in late 2009 calling for a ban on Meridia. The petition was based on a recent study that found the weight loss drug may increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, resuscitated cardiac arrest, death and other cardiovascular problems.
Meridia is a prescription-only weight-loss supplement that was approved by the FDA in 1997. Marketed as Meridia in the United States, it is sold elsewhere under the names Reductil, Teduzade and
Zelium.
Meridia Deaths
As of June 30, 2009, the FDA Adverse Event Reactions (AERS) database attributes at least 84 Meridia deaths from cardiovascular related causes have been reported to the FDA, according to the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen.
Among the deaths, 30 occurred in people who were 50 years old or younger and 11 were 30 years old or younger. Since the number of adverse events reported to the FDA typically only involves 1% to 10% of the true number of problems experienced by users, it is conceivable that more deaths related to Meridia have occurred throughout the United States.
