Birth Defects Related to Topamax
Epilepsy drug Topamax may increase the risk of birth defects. The
Food & Drug administration warned that data indicates a
significantly higher rate of cleft lip and cleft palate in babies
whose mothers took Topamax duing the first trimester of pregnancy.
The drug's pregnancy category was raised to D, which indicates it
can harm a human fetus. Infants who were exposed to Topamax during
the first trimester of pregnancy had an increased rate of mouth
defects, almost three times higher than other seizure
medications.
Topamax is sometimes prescribed to treat migraines.
Topamax is sometimes sold in a generic form called Topiramate.
Other Topamax Side Effects
Other birth defects have been linked to the use of Topamax,
including spina bifida, genital birth defects, limb malformations,
hypospadias, persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN),
craniofacial defects, heart defects, lung defects and neural tube
defects.
In 2008 the FDA warned that the use of Topamax should be closely
monitored as increases in mood changes and depression were often
observed.
As early as 2004, the FDA warned that the sales materials
distributed with Topamax downplayed other potential Topamax side
effects including oligohidrosis (decreased sweating), hperthermia,
and metabolic acidosis.
