Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) Injuries and Death
Between 2007 and 2009, the FDA received 6 reports of death and 77 reports of personal injuries associated with the use of NPWT systems. Most of the wrongful death reports occurred from use at home or in a long term care nursing home facility. Extensive bleeding was the most serious complication as reported in six wrongful deaths and 17 personal injuries.
Infection from original wounds or remnants of dressing pieces in the wound, frequently at nursing homes, was listed in 27 injury reports.
