Consumers have filed lawsuits over Pfizer's smoking cessation drug Chantix, and lawyers will begin taking individual plaintiff depositions next month (September 2011). Claimants allege that Chantix may have caused users to commit suicide or suffer serious injury due to psychological side effects including aggressive behavior that has resulted in injury.

Hundreds of Chantix lawsuits have been consolidated as part of an multi-district litigation in the US District Court for Northern District of Alabama.

A small group of cases have been selected in an "initial discovery pool," for use in early trial dates in the multidistrict litigation.

The FDA recently added new information about the safety of popular smoking cessation drug Chantix to include warnings about potential heart risks for people with heart disease.

The FDA announced the new label for Chantix after analyzing a study that found an increased risk of heart attacks and other heart problems among Chantix users with cardiovascular disease.

Chantix is already associated with the most FDA adverse event reports of any prescription drug in the US. The increased risk of heart issues comes on the heals of a 2009 FDA warning that the drug might increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. More patients and doctors contact the FDA to complain about Chantix related health problems than any other drug currently on the market.
