UPDATE 2/20/2010 - Avandia

A Senate report said Saturday that drug maker GlaxoSmithKline knew of possible heart attack risks tied to Avandia, its diabetes medication, years before such evidence became public.

Avandia is a once popular diabetes drug that may be related to a variety of health maladies, including heart and liver damage.

A few years ago, Avandia's heart risks were brought to light when a popular medical journal reported a 43% greater risk of heart attacks among Avandia users when compared with those taking other diabetes drugs. In addition, use of Avandia may cause vision problems, including blurred vision and decreased visual acuity, and other health complications including liver problems, rapid weight gain, jaundice, hypoglycemia, and other conditions.

In December 2006, GlaxoSmithKline, the maker of Avandia, alerted physicians that the drug had been shown to have side effects that include two kinds of edema in patients. (Peripheral edema is a swelling of the extremities due to fluid buildup. Macular edema is a swelling and protein buildup in the eye).

A public safety advisory was issued in 2007 to warn Avandia patients of the cardiovascular risk associated with the drug's use. At this time, the FDA has not issued an Avandia recall, claiming that sufficient evidence as to the dangers versus the benefits of the drug does not exist.

In May 2007, the New England Journal of Medicine published an analysis of dozens of studies on nearly 28,000 people who had taken Avandia. The journal said there was a 43 percent higher risk of heart attack for those taking Avandia compared to people taking other diabetes drugs or no diabetes medication. The findings raised concerns because two-thirds of the people with Type 2 diabetes, the most common form, die of heart problems.
